Microcement

A microcement mortar is a mixture composed mainly of cement, polymers and pigments, which is applied in thin layers of approximately 2-3 mm thickness on surfaces such as floors, walls, worktops, among others.

Its composition gives it properties such as wear resistance, impermeability and flexibility. It is applied manually with a trowel and can be pigmented in a wide range of colours. Once dry, it is sealed with a varnish or resin to protect it and give it a final finish.

In addition, work with microcement has been perfected and technically advanced.

At Homecret, we offer a wide range of possibilities and decorative finishes, where you set the limit. Give your rooms a unique and personal character thanks to the different textures (thick, medium or thin); the wide variety of microcement colours; and the different finishes that our varnishes and metallic coatings allow.

Its versatility has led to its increasing presence in the renovation of private homes, commercial premises and large surfaces such as sports centres, industrial warehouses, hotels and restaurants.

A continuous covering for floors, walls, stairs, ceilings, swimming pools and even furniture. A state-of-the-art, seamless covering that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

It is laid in a short time (about 35 m2 per day). Although it is true that it is not cheap to apply (the material is), its price decreases the larger the surface to be covered. Microcement can be applied on any rigid surface -it is very adherent- without the need to remove the original covering and only adds 2-3 mm in thickness. It is therefore an interesting option to consider not only for its aesthetics and properties but also because it allows renovation without removing the existing material.

This material is composed of a cementitious base mixed with polymers, fibres, aerators, ultrafine aggregates and accelerators, to which coloured pigments are added to give the desired finish.

The finish can be matt, satin or glossy and has different textures, which can be: coarse, medium or fine, these finishing details that can influence the final appearance, creating a more artisanal microcement, with an irregular texture and rustic appearance or others that are more polished and smooth. There are also microcements suitable for swimming pools and outdoor floors that are not altered by ultraviolet rays and withstand extreme temperatures.

Characteristics of microcement

  • Versatility: Microcement can be applied to a wide range of surfaces, including concrete, tile, wood, plaster and more. This makes it a popular choice for renovations and interior design projects.
  • Thin thickness: Microcement is applied in very thin layers, making it ideal for renovating spaces without adding excessive weight or requiring a large amount of space.
  • Resistance and durability: It is a wear, moisture and abrasion resistant material, making it suitable for use in high traffic areas, kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Easy maintenance: Microcement is easy to clean and maintain, making it a practical choice for homes and businesses.
  • Modern aesthetics: It offers a contemporary, minimalist look, with a wide range of colours and finishes available, allowing for significant customisation in design.
  • Waterproofing: Can be applied to form waterproof surfaces, making it suitable for wet areas such as bathrooms and showers.
  • Seamless application: Unlike conventional tiles, microcement is applied seamlessly, which gives a sense of continuity to the surface.

Advantages of microcement

1º) No demolition – Can be restored without demolition, fast and clean processing.

2nd) Low thickness – No change of thickness in case of renovation.

3rd) Seamless – can be applied without limits or interruptions depending on the existing surface.

4º) Continuity – Can be applied continuously between floors and walls.

5º) High customisation – Infinite possibilities of colours, textures and processes.

Micromortar

Micro-mortar is a micro-cement but with a coarser grain. Microcement powder has a particle size of 0.080 microns, while micro-mortar is considered to have a particle size greater than 0.100 microns.

In Homecret we have three different particle sizes: 0.080 microns called Microcement, 0.125 microns called Medium Micromortar, and a third particle size of 0.400 microns called Base Micromortar.

Micromortars are used on floors with more intensive sanding than on walls and on walls to obtain texture in the application. The stucco effect of microcement is not possible with this type of micro-mortar.

Like microcement, micro-mortar is applied in thin layers on a variety of substrates, such as concrete, ceramic, tiles, wood and plaster, among others. It provides a smooth, continuous finish, similar to microcement, but with some differences in composition and application.

One of the main characteristics of micro-mortar is its ability to cover and renovate existing surfaces quickly and efficiently. It can be used to update and beautify walls, floors, ceilings and other surfaces both indoors and outdoors.

Micro-mortar is available in a wide range of colours and finishes, allowing versatile customisation of spaces. In addition, it offers good resistance to wear, water and atmospheric agents, making it suitable for a variety of applications in different environments.

Its composition of cement and other additives make it perfect for floors and walls, both indoors and outdoors. It is a very versatile and resistant product, its composition with fibreglass and high-strength mortars.

Micro-mortar on Lime base

Lime-based mortars resist water penetration better, and allow moisture trapped in the masonry to evaporate through the mortar, thereby reducing damage to the masonry.

Applying lime mortars in interiors offers a number of benefits that go beyond simple aesthetics. These mortars are a sustainable and healthy option that significantly improves the quality of the indoor environment.

First, lime mortars are highly breathable. This means that they allow the natural evacuation of moisture, helping to regulate temperature and reduce condensation. This property prevents the proliferation of mould and bacteria, improving the air quality in the home and creating a healthier environment for the whole family.

In addition, lime has natural antibacterial and fungicidal properties, which protects walls from deterioration and prolongs their lifespan. It is also a flexible material, which helps to absorb small structural movements and reduces the possibility of cracks appearing over time.

Last but not least, lime mortars are environmentally friendly. Being a natural material, its production requires less energy and generates less CO₂ emissions compared to other conventional materials, thus contributing to a more sustainable construction.

Customisable colour with our natural pigments.

Characteristics of lime-based micro-mortar

Lime mortar is a traditional mixture of hydrated lime, sand and water. It is used in construction and restoration of historic buildings due to its specific properties:

  • Breathability: It allows moisture to pass through the walls, preventing moisture build-up and damage to the structure.
  • Flexibility: It is more flexible than cement mortars, making it suitable for buildings that may experience movement.
  • Aesthetics: Offers a natural and warm appearance, ideal for the restoration of old buildings.
  • Sustainability: Lime is an abundant material with low environmental impact.
  • Fire resistance: Provides good fire resistance.

Marmorino effect microcement

Marmorino mortar is obtained by mixing different materials, using resin as a binder. Material exclusively for walls.

The popularity of marmorino is partly due to its versatility as well as its physical properties as a wall covering. It can be finished in a variety of ways: surfaces can be textured, polished and resemble raw limestone or even polished marble. Pigments can be added for a range of effects including subtle detailing, solid colours or even patterns and decorations moulded into the marmorino.

The type and colour of marble used to make the marmorino influences the colour of the finished product. Additives can also be used to add a wide variety of pigments to give a variety of colours. Other additives, such as silica or sand, should not be used, as they can make such an attractive wall covering less attractive. Nowadays, marble residues are only ground to produce real marmorino.

As a wall covering, marmorino has great durability. When dry it almost approaches limestone in strength, allowing thin layers to last for many years. It is water resistant, making it suitable for exterior walls and facades. It is both air and moisture permeable, allowing moisture to escape and evaporate quickly.
